Catching Rays: A Porch Swing Quilts Pattern

I'm ready for sunshine, aren't you? And not winter sunshine. Warm sunshine. Spring. Mud. Flowers. Easter. My birthday.

I've fallen back in love with Layer Cake quilts. Jelly Rolls are cute to look at, all stacked up, but Layer Cakes are just so much more versatile for me. This quilt, Catching Rays, is a perfect layer cake quilt. She's made up of 16 blocks, and takes just 32 layer cake squares. Add a border, and she finishes at 72" square.

I used a layer cake of Folklore by Lily Ashbury, and I love how sunshine-y it turned out. It would look great using Kate Spain's new line Paradiso too:

I also worked up an all solids version, reversing the background to yellow and the prints to solid white.

The pattern is uploaded to my Craftsy shop, and listed at $5 for the next week. Hope you like her!

  2. I didn't like the first quilt, but that is cause it has orange and bright green in it, which are the two colors I just do not like at all...but WOW...that one with the blues and pinks... I LOVE that one! Amazing how just a change of color changes the entire outlook on a quilt! Nice work!

  6. It's a fantastic pattern! I've never done a layer cake quilt but may have to try. I love the way this pattern in particular balances the elements to create an interesting but not overpowering effect. I don't feel like the complexity of the piecing interrupts the fabric or vice versa. Well done!

  7. I love your use of the Odd Fellows block. Your quilt looks great. BTW, did you know that Kate Spain shared your picture of it done in her fabrics too? She is nice that way. She once did that for me as well. Congrats on a great finish!

  9. Love it! Those colors are fantastic, and the pattern is so cool. I prefer working with layer cakes too, I just think there's so much more I can do with a layer cake vs a jelly roll. :)
