Friday Finish: Introducing Taffy, another Fabulous Fat Eighth Quilt!

Introducing Taffy, my second quilt design, available in my Craftsy shop.

She's fat eighth friendly. Honestly, F8 bundles are quickly becoming my favorite pre-cut. Not as pricey as a fat quarter, but still enough of the line to make a decent sized quilt. And this girl is 75" square. All stitched up in the bright candy colors of Wee Wander.

I backed her in baby pink minky, and of course my baby girl has claimed it. Do you know how many quilts this girly has? Yeah. Too many.

Taffy would be adorable in just red and white, for Christmas:

I might make just four or six blocks for a table runner too:

Kate, while testing, is making Taffy up using Be Jolly, a Christmas line from Moda, and it's adorable:

Kate is the genius behind the fabulously nested seams on all my patterns. Taffy was a challenge, and I'm always ready to just throw in the towel and press everything open, but Kate solved the puzzle and these babies lock together like Legos. It's a beautiful thing! Must be why she's so fabulous at t-shirt quilt designs. Seriously. A master at puzzles, Miss Kate.

And there's a giveaway! But there's a catch. Here's the catch. I'm wondering something.

There's a big "mini" trend. I love them for their cuteness, but honestly, my Gran's voice is in my head saying, "What's that supposed to cover, my elbow?" Quilts, at my house, are meant for snuggling.

So why not big quilt blocks? Like, say 30-inch blocks?

I sketched up a Taffy quilt, just for fun, that's 75" square, just like the original, only it uses 30" blocks instead. So just four blocks. Wouldn't that be fabulous? Just four blocks and you have a big, snuggly quilt!

So that's your question. Maxi or mini? Would you make a quilt with giant blocks, or do you prefer the mini trend? Maybe we could start our own trend.

Winner will receive a free PDF copy of Taffy AND Make It Do. Giveaway ends on Thursday, November 13th at 11:59 p.m. MST. Good luck!

Oh, and if you don't want to wait, pattern is for sale in my Craftsy shop. Just $5 for the first week, then $9 after the 7th.

  1. I love your pattern. :) and I have to say I like both. I love the quick finish with big blocks, and I love mini quilts for stuffed animals and dolls. Plus I enjoy decorating with quilts.

  2. I don't like the mini trend. I think my fingers are too chunky and I'm too clumsy to deal with small pieces. Large pieces are more forgiving and a large quilt make a statement.
Do your instructions include the 30" block? I would do that.

  3. Cute quilt! I prefer big quilts, just don't see the point of all that work for something tiny lol!

  6. I have to agree with you the bigger the better!! I don't understand the mini trend, they're super cute and fun to make, but I would rather make a big quilt. I love the Taffy pattern, super cute I'm thinking reds and greens for Christmas!

  8. I go both ways. I like the mini trend for fun swaps. I've joined in on the Wallflowers Quilt Along with Bloomerie Fabrics. The 20 inch block by Cluck cluck Sew is beautiful!

  13. I do like to try the 'mega block' versions. They make quick Linus quilts.

  19. Since I just spend a few hours redrafting a 7.5 inch block into a 20 inch block - I vote maxi.

  20. Maxi, for sure... Love nested seams also...

  21. I guess I go either way with it. I love little blocks, but it is quite a bit of work. Large is great too, it puts a dent in my stash! Well, actually it would take quite a bit to make a dent, but I can dream! See, this is why voting troubles me, I just don't know how to make a decision!

  23. Fabulous quilt pattern, Jennie! I love how it looks in the red and white. The design looks totally different.

I tend to go big win my quilts. I have a couple of minis, however they aren't my first choice. I did buy a mini kit, but my plan is to make more blocks so it at least measures into a baby quilt. It makes it more practical. =)

  25. This is a seriously cute quilt. And I'm a big quilt person myself. I'm not sure about the big block thing. It's never really been one of my favorites.

  26. I've made mini's to practice some free motion quilting, but much prefer the real thing.

  27. Love your pattern, I'm voting for maxi, I really like the mini, but have to agree with your Grandma, what good is a mini quilt?!

  28. Beautiful pattern you have put together. I prefer a real size quilt, minis just don't cover enough and what else are they for :)

  29. Maxi! I'd rather use a quilt, than put it on my wall or table top. Let's face it, no table top around here is clear enough for anyone to see the table topper! Minis look cute, but making one would be enough for me. I'm not into fiddly.
