Farm Girl Vintage Blog Hop: Gingham!

Hi! Welcome to the Gingham Stop on the Farm Girl Vintage blog hop, hosted by the lovely folks at Fat Quarter Shop.

I have a big thing for gingham. (I wish this were a picture of me!)

I heart gingham. Think my husband will let me gingham-ify our house?

Those stairs make me swoon!

And when I got a choice of blocks to feature from Lori Holt's new book Farm Girl Vintage, there was no question in my mind. Gingham is my girl.

I also love polka dots. And so I made my gingham blocks using the Swiss Dot prints from Riley Blake. Gingham made from polka dot fabrics? Using patriotic colors? It's a trifecta of awesome!

The secret? I learned this little trick from the wonderful Lori as well: when you need the perfect, just-lighter-than-what-you've-got fabric, you flip it over to the wrong side and voila - a perfect match.

I made the large table runner from Lori's book. And it's on my table for the Fourth of July this year. Complete with apple pies and cherry pies. Because that's what you eat on the Fourth of July! Although it looks pretty great on my piano too:

In honor of Lori's book release, I've got THREE, count 'em, THREE giveaways going. The prizes?

  • A copy of Lori's Book Farm Girl Vintage (sponsored by moi)

  • A bundle of Riley Blake Gingham fabrics (sponsored by Riley Blake)

To enter, just leave a comment. What do I want to hear? Answer a question for me: have you tried, or are you interested in trying chicken scratch embroidery (where you embroider over the squares on gingham fabric)? Want to see what it looks like? I've got an entire Pinterest board dedicated to Gingham and Polka Dots, with lots of pictures of chicken scratch. Giveaway closes next Friday, July 10th, at 10-ish MST time.

  1. I didn't try chicken embroidery yet but it sounds like a great idea. I love cross-stitching and embroidery and this mixture of the two sounds right like my style! Thanks for sharing and I love the stairs, too:-)

  6. I lllloooovvveee me some gingham! It's one of my favorites. (Second only to polka dots)

I have not tried chicken scratch embroidery. I've seen some cute projects here and there... but I don't have the patience for it. Or maybe it's that I'd rather be whipping together tiny hexies instead?
I do love seeing what others have done though!

  7. I've never done that type of cross stitch but would like to do it sometime. I also love Gingham. I used Lori's trick of using back side of fabric when I made her nail polish quilt, it works great. I used the Gingham block pattern and made a long table runner.

  9. Somewhere,I have an old old sunbonnet that my granny used to wear. It has what she called chicken scratch on the brim. I even sorta remember here doing some "scratch" work on an apron!

  12. Love the gingham !! I am not into embroidery so I have to say no to the chicken scratch.

  13. I love gingham, too, but haven't used it in my decor since leaving Kansas in 1978. Though I've never heard it called chicken scratch, that was how we learned to embroider as children.

  14. I collected patterns for chicken scratch embroidery years ago, but never got around to trying it. I wonder what ever happened to those patterns...

  15. I first embroidered chicken scratch on a gingham apron in home-ec class during junior high school, and loved it!! I made a few pieces after that, sure wish I still had them and that apron. Yes, I think I'd be interested in doing more. Thanks for the chance to win!

  93. I have never tried chicken scratch, but after seeing your pintrest board I will definitely be trying it! I love the quilt with the chicken scratch stars, but I'll probably start with something smaller like a kitchen towel. Thanks for your inspiration!

  94. I haven't tried chicken scratch embroidery but i have a pillow made with it that a student's mom made for me back in the early 80's. I love gingham as well! !

  95. Oh yes I want to learn to do chicken scratch. I have an old table cloth my mom made with redgingham that I cherish.

  96. Red gingham is a HUGE love of mine - and chicken scratch just makes it cuter. I did try it on a little heart that I sewed together and made puffy. I love it. I have a vintage red gingham circle skirt on a maniquin in my family room that cheers up the room. I do also have a chicken scratch red apron that was my grandmothers. All LOVE!

  97. I had never heard of chicken scratch - thank you for the introduction! The gingham gives you a grid for doing the embroidery work. Genius!

  98. i loved doing the Chicken Scratch embroidery way back when. My grandma was making aprons
(I still have some) and she showed me how. An update would be great. Thanks for the chance to win some goodies.
